/Soul to Squeeze - RHCP

Una meravigliosa e melodica linea di basso fa da protagonista in questo brano del 1993 pubblicato come parte della colonna sonora del film "Coneheads" (teste di cono).

Registrata durante la produzione dell'album "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" (immagine), "Soul to Squeeze" fu tagliata dalla lista tracce del disco. Album che peraltro cambiò la carriera dei Red Hot Chili Peppers dopo anni passati a sperimentare con il college-rock, portandoli alla celebrità. Fra i pezzi più famosi contenuti nell'album citiamo "Give It Away", "Under the Bridge", "Breaking the Girl" e "Suck My Kiss".

Alla chitarra della canzone lavorò John Frusciante, ma non apparve nel video, dato che dal gruppo se n'era andato già nel 1992.

I testi di Kiedis suggeriscono che nella sua vita esista un luogo solitario, che lo rende irrazionale. Versi come "Insanity it seems" ed "Amongst the dying trees I scream" rappresentano la sua introversione personale e mostrano tutta l'angoscia che il cantante, all'epoca lontano dalle droghe ma non in un momento felice della sua vita, probabilmente ancora avvertiva.

Il fatto che Soul To Squeeze sia un testo riguardante la depressione giustifica la scelta e l'impostazione del video in bianco e nero. Inoltre il video è ambientato nel retro di un circo, e coloro che gestiscono i circhi conducono una vita senza meta, dispersa (proprio come si sentiva Anthony in quel momento).

Il cantante si presenta all'inizio con serpenti al posto dei capelli ricordando quasi l'arcinota opera del Caravaggio "Scudo con testa di Medusa", mentre canta "I got a bad disease", che dona una sfumatura comica al verso e sembra ricondurre ai tempi in cui Kiedis era dipendente da droga.
